Peek Inside the Box

Thought I'd give you a glimpse of the kinds of things we're getting in our CSA box from Calvert Farm every Wednesday. Contents differ weekly except for things like corn and squash. Last week we had the loveliest, best tasting cauliflower I've ever had. Yesterday's bounty:

Napa cabbage
yellow pole beans
long lavender eggplant
five frying peppers
two zucchini
one crook-neck squash
five beets
six carrots
six ears corn
sweet onion
thyme

I bought four tomatoes at the orchard when I picked up the box, so it is probably obvious from the above list that ratatouille is on the menu for tonight. Probably over mini penne.

Yummy!!! What on earth is crook-neck squash? Now you have me craving fresh veggies, but the two closest farmers markets are an equidistant 30 minutes away from my house, boo hiss! That was one benefit of living in the ghetto in DC. A fresh farmer's market came right into the heart of my community every Thursday once WIC started giving vouchers people could use there. I miss all that fresh produce.

PTLM, crook-neck squash is a yellow squash with a long, curved neck. Some people just call it "yellow squash," but there are also common yellow squashes that are straight, more like zucchini.

I would definitely drive 30 minutes both ways once a week to get some good local produce, but then again, I'm not going to school, working full time, and handling a family all at the same time! ;)
